Preserving Musical Traditions

Are North Indian/Pakistani classical music or qavvali in danger of dying out? Should we try to preserve either one?

Many musical types and traditions around the world are drifting towards oblivion. A recent article in the Chronicle Review discussed this issue.

"No venues, no audience, no radio play, and few if any recordings. "The music has died, not because it is boring but because the support structure has dropped away," says Schippers."

Can anything be done to save such musics? Huib Schippers, director of the Queensland Conservatorium at Griffith University, in Australia, has started a project to do exactly that.

"Now a $5-million project he leads on "sustainable cultures for music futures" is using nine case studies, including Western opera, Balinese gamelan music, aboriginal songs in Australia's Northern Territory, Ewe music of West Africa, and Mexican mariachi to find strategies that can keep musical traditions alive.
He and his collaborators sought out a range of genres, from some that seem to have a strong chance of survival, such as opera, to others that are on the verge of extinction, such as ca trù. Schippers is conducting one of the case studies himself, looking at classical music in northern India."

One question comes to mind. Should traditions that are dying because the general public doesn't care enough to support them, be allowed to die out?

Jazz men in the diaspora

This is exciting - two musicians of Indian extraction have won the Jazz Journalists Association's 2010 awards.

Vijay Iyer won the "Musician of the Year" award (mind you, legendary jazz man Sonny Rollins had also been nominated in this category) and Rudresh Mahanthappa won as "Alto Saxophonist of the Year".

Iyer was really on a roll. He was also nominated in the following categories; Composer of the Year; Record of the Year (for Historicity by the Vijay Iyer Trio); Small Ensemble of the Year (the Vijay Iyer trio); and Pianist of the Year. Fantastic!

Rudresh is involved in multiple projects including one called the Indo-Pak Coalition which features Rudresh on alto, Rez Abbasi (a Pakistani-American) on guitar, and Dan Weiss on tabla. Rudresh and Rez have also played together with Kadri Gopalnath who plays Carnatic music on the alto saxophone. Here is a clip featuring all three of these musicians and Rudresh providing some commentary.

In Search of the Minnesota Muslim

KFAI is part of a project (cosponsored by the University of Minnesota's Institute for Global Studies) that seeks to give voice to the Muslim community. As part of this project, KFAI is broadcasting and streaming a series of documentary clips about Muslims in Minnesota.

l was one of the contributors to this project. My piece "In Search of the Minnesota Muslim" will air on March 18, 2009, during the KFAI Evening News beginning at 6:00 pm US Central Time (2300 UTC). The clip is 6 minutes long (as are most of the others).

“In Search of the Minnesota Muslim” is an exploration of Muslims lives in Minnesota.

The piece features Muslims from a variety of cultural and professional backgrounds talking about how they practice their faith, how it guides their lives, and how it positions them in the broader socio-cultural scene. The respondents include students, an accountant, a homemaker, a lawyer, an engineer, a business manager, and an Information Technology professional.

These individuals describe what it means to be a Muslim, the fundamental practices of the Islamic creed, how they try to live an Islamic life, and whether they are different from other Minnesotans. Their serious statements intermixed with some spontaneous humorous remarks and an uncommon twist or two, paint a richly textured picture of Muslim life in Minnesota.

some women are creating their own definition of feminism. Still another
story asks what drives Minnesota Hip Hop artists who intertwine their faith
with the pounding beats and steady rhythms of their art form. Some of the
stories are produced by Muslim reporters who bring their own perspectives
and insights to their work.

“Muslims in Minnesota” begins March 10, and will continue every Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday at 6pm during the KFAI Evening News, 90.3FM,
Minneapolis and 106.7FM, St. Paul. The stories along with pictures,

First of all, many thanks to those of you who pledged support to KFAI and Sangam during our pledge drive in the past few weeks. Please accept my personal thanks as well those on behalf of the station. Your financial support and continued listening to the program is much appreciated.

Despite the calendar the weather in Minnesota continues to be cloudy, flurried, drizzly, and chilly. )-:

Additionally, we will also talk with the eclectic and beautiful Maniza Naqvi. Banker, writer, humanitarian, volunteer, Maniza has published several novels and plays. She will talk about politics, activism, books, and her latest novel - A Matter of Detail. "The story revolves around the family of Haji Rueewallah, a businessman in Karachi, his two wive, Hajrabia from the B'nai Israel community that lived in Karachi, and and Zareenabia, his first cousin and second wife, and their five children."
